Since the June 2016 referendum result in favour of leaving the European Union, questions have arisen regarding the role of courts in the process of exiting the EU, as well as their future role once the United Kingdom leaves. The question of whether the UK Government could notify the Council of the European Union of its intention to leave the Union was decided by the Supreme Court in R (Miller) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.

Political identity has become a central question in European politics. A key issue is that whilst the EU has greatly expanded its powers in key policy domains that traditionally have been the preserve of nation states, its political identity remains weak. Cultural heritage is closely linked with identity.

Lezing 7 februari 2019: Carlo Ruzza - The Impact of Populist Parties on EU Institutions and Civil Society Organizations

This presentation focuses on how the ‘populist turn’ of recent years has affected EU institutions and the non-state actors interacting with them. On the basis of a set of in-depth interviews and text analyses, it argues that the success of populist parties has affected the composition, agendas, and political culture of European institutional actors.
